Reviews: Cleopatra Giulio Cesare at Dutch National Opera January/February 2023
Julie Fuchs conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm
“And Julie Fuchs must be highlighted in the first place as Cleopatra, seductive, sure of herself but also vulnerable and at the same time displaying all the vocal virtuosity that the music demands.”
“The French singer knows how to recreate herself in the accentuation and the text; and she has a way of doing things that is very similar to the baroque world, abounding in the beautiful use of non vibrato punctually in special notes normally tense harmonically or appoggiatura, and varying that vibrato in the long notes, with which she selects motifs and moments in a very rich way with the orchestra. The way of attacking many high notes on the piano is also beautiful… above all, in a fantastic da capo of "Piangerò la sorte mia" beautifully realized and communicated.”

“...radiant performance of the French soprano, whose crystalline voice was as capable of doing justice to the seductive character of the queen of Egypt as to her most sorrowful face (a beautiful "Piangerò" lovingly wrapped by Haïm).”
“Julie Fuchs (Cleopatra) is a very gifted soprano with depth as an actress. Her sweet and light flying lirico-leggero doesn't falter anywhere, wears everywhere and the singer shows creativity in her embellishments. In her top hit aria “Piangerò la sorte mia”... she shows with great empathy the signs of madness, when the grief is too great to bear.”
“Julie Fuchs' debut at the Amsterdam Opera was spiced up by the delicious fusion she made with the stage… The theatricality of the appoggiaturas and the electricity of the performance do a lot of good."
“Julie Fuchs, however, steals the show in almost every respect as the virtuoso Cleopatra with her seemingly effortlessly floating soprano. She wraps him effortlessly around her finger in the seduction scene and also knows how to assert herself effectively against her brother Tolomeo.”
“Cleopatra benefited from the presence of soprano Julie Fuchs, a convincing interpreter who knows how to give substance and credibility to her characters, with a captivating stage presence and a pleasant, agile and colorful singing; her delicate timbre imprinted a delicate color, for example, on her aria 'Piangerò la sorte mia' in with the traverso flute.”
